Medicinal Cannabis for Treating Skin Cancer?

Medicinal Cannabis for Treating Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. According to the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation… “Over 80,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Canada each year, more than 5,000 of which are melanoma, the mostly deadly form of skin cancer. Canadians born in the 1990s have two to three times higher lifetime risk of getting skin cancer (1 in 6) than those born in the 1960s (1 in 20). There are more new cases of skin cancer each year than the number of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers COMBINED!”

The primary cause of Skin Cancer is UV radiation from either the sun or from tanning beds. There is also some evidence that exposure to certain chemicals may also lead to skin cancer.  At this time the conventional medical course of treatment is to cut out the cancer lesion or if found in the later stages and has spread, chemotherapy is used. But what if there was an alternative treatment that was non invasive and came from nature, and what if it was Cannabis!

Last year, Japanese researchers published a study in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology  which demonstrated a marked reduction (up to 90%) of the skin lesions in mice when treated with synthetic cannabinoids. Also researchers from Europe performed a study on  the endocannabinoid system and how it fights melanoma, which is the most deadly type as it causes 75% of skin cancer deaths. The study published in European Journal of Pharmacology showed that the endocannabinoids actually killed the cancer cells! According to the study, the most effective of these endocannabinoids was Anandamide (AEA), which is known to activate the same cannabinoid receptors in the brain that THC does. Although these studies are very promising more research needs to done before medicinal cannabis will be accepted by the medical community as a form of treatment.
