Medicinal Cannabis for Arthritis

Medicinal Cannabis for Arthritis

According to the The Arthritis Society of Canada “The term arthritis (“arthro” meaning joint, “itis” meaning inflammation) is used to refer to more than 100 related conditions. Arthritis can strike anyone at anytime, regardless of age, physical condition or ethnic background, often with devastating and debilitating effects. Arthritis brings with it a burden of pain and disability that those living with this disease must face every day. The main symptoms of arthritis are chronic joint pain, stiffness and swelling, which can result in significant disability and poor quality of life. Over 4.6 million Canadian adults (one in six Canadians aged 15 years and older) report having arthritis. By 2036, this number is expected to grow to an estimated 7.5 million Canadian adults (one in five).”

There is no cure for arthritis and only limited treatment options available, but there is plenty of (patient reported) anecdotal evidence, as well as a few clinical studies that supports the use of Cannabis as a treatment for both Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis. The THC and CBD in Cannabis work amazingly well to suppress the immune systems over-activity, which is the cause of inflammation and pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Very few doctors are aware of how effective medicinal cannabis is as a treatment for Arthritis, but patients are starting to educate themselves and are seeking out Physicians who are willing to prescribe medicinal cannabis as a treatment for this debilitating condition.

By smoking or vaporizing medicinal cannabis, arthritis sufferers can get fast acting relief from pain, or there is the option of ingesting cannabis infused tinctures, teas, drinks and other edibles, which are slower acting, but tend to offer longer lasting relief. Topical salves and ointments made with cannabis that are rubbed onto sore joints are also available.
